This has been a wet rainy season thus far and more wet weather is headed for the South Eastern states as well as some of the Midwest states. In the month of April, flooding records were broken as many major rivers surged. While fierce flood fighting continues along the rain-swollen Illinois River, the worst of the flood threat appears to be over on the Mississippi River. Although, city officials have breathing room, they are still concerned for the rest of the rainy season.
The mighty Mississippi River surged to damaging major flood heights along a 200-mile stretch in western Illinois just north of St. Louis, Missouri, and as a result the Governor of Illinois declared 44 counties disaster areas. Thousands of people were evacuated around the state, and the floodwaters and damaged or destroyed homes and business and shut down roads.
Counties included in the governor’s declaration included: Adams, Brown, Bureau, Calhoun, Carroll, Cass, Champaign, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Fulton, Greene, Grundy, Hancock, Henderson, Henry, Jersey, Jo Daviess, Kane, Kendall, Lake, LaSalle, Marshall, Mason, McHenry, Mercer, Morgan, Peoria, Pike, Putnam, Rock Island, Schuyler, Scott, Tazewell, Whiteside, Will, Winnebago and Woodford.
