The weather services are saying that a historic snow storm is threatening the North East Coast potentially dropping two-feet of snow. According to the National Weather Service, Boston may receive 24 inches of snow as the coastline and New York City may get 10 inches of snow. Blizzard-like conditions are expected in Suffolk Country in Long Island.
While the threat for potential damage to occur is much less than the recent super-storm Sandy, large amounts of snow can cause and reveal potential water damage issues. When large amounts of snow sits on a roof, the weight can create potential leaking areas. Additionally, if a home had a pre-existing leaking area, snow fall, when melting, will find any problem areas.
Be on the look out for any signs of leaks. Discoloration on the ceiling and any unexpected water spots around door frames are good indicators that water has found its way into your home. Additionally, it is important to keep in mind that, sometimes water leaks into the attic without you knowing. It is a good idea to take a look in your attic after a large snow fall to see if you have any potential issues. Look for any wet wood or wet insulation.
